From The Desk of Pastor Matt

Somebody once asked why I don’t tell more stories about myself during sermons. My response was something along the lines of, “Trust me, I’m not very interesting to hear about.” Well, I still usually feel that way most of the time. I am not belittling myself, just being honest. I live a very ordinary life in many ways. I go home to clean, mow the lawn, eat dinner, and watch TV. Nothing worth reporting back on there.
               
However, I think I have missed the mark. According to the way Christ lived and died, we all matter greatly. Not long ago, we talked in worship about the prostitute Jesus had a run-in with from Luke 7. Most people had probably dismissed her as worthless and a sinner. Jesus saw something better in her, and he gave her a new, healed life. He took the time to notice her and care for her. She mattered to him. Jesus did the same thing for Mary, the Samaritan woman, and so many others.
               
Christ not only listens to the stories of our lives but tells us that they matter. Our stories matter. They tell of who we are, what we have done, and the people we love.
               
Your stories matter. My stories are worthwhile. We need to be heard and seen for who we are.
               
More often than not, the world won’t have the time or interest to learn who you are. It is easy for us to be self-absorbed or unconcerned. It is easy not to really listen when others are talking. I can breeze through my day without noticing what others are going through.  However, you all have something worth sharing with others. We all deserve to be seen and heard.
               
So, who you are is worthwhile. That goes for me, too. That goes for others, as well.
